Success Stories: USDA Rural Development Provides Home Repairs for Native American Senior

Outline of Need:

Bernice Steele, an elderly woman in West Wendover, Nevada, owns a single-wide mobile home that needed repairs to the bathroom flooring, hallway ceiling, kitchen cabinets, front steps, front and back doors, broken windows and window screens. Ms. Steele's limited income prevented her from making the needed repairs.

How Rural Development Helped:

Ms. Steele saw a USDA Rural Development flier posted in the West Wendover Senior Citizens Center and she contacted the Elko Local Office for assistance. USDA Rural Development staff assisted with the completion of her pre-qualification form and determined that she was eligible for a Section 504 housing repair grant (learn more about this program). Since the bid for repairs exceeded the maximum grant limit of $7,500, USDA Rural Development staff contacted the Rural Nevada Development Corporation (RNDC), a non-profit organization, to partner with RNDC to complete the repairs.

The Results:

Bernice Steele in her remodeled kitchenUSDA Rural Development grant funds provided a new bathroom floor, repaired the kitchen cabinets, repaired the hallway ceiling, installed new front steps with a handrail, and replaced the front and back doors. RNDC provided weatherization program funds, which were used to replace all of the windows and window screens. Ms. Steele was happy to give a tour of her home during the final inspection.  She said she could tell a difference in the warmth of her home without a breeze blowing through.
