Outline of Need:
Food in our bellies and a roof over our head, the most basic of needs, we believe. But for Josh and Amanda Drewry and their two young sons one of those basic needs came crashing down during a devastating ice storm. The ice storm caused extensive damage to the area including the small trailer house the family was renting. A tree came crashing through the roof of the trailer leaving the family exposed to the bitter cold. The conditions were harsh; the area received a Federal Disaster Declaration due to the extensive damage. Wanting to provide safety and comfort for their young sons, the couple decided to pursue their dream of homeownership. They patched the trailer making it somewhat livable and began their search for homeownership opportunities.
How Rural Development Helped:
The couple was introduced to the Rural Development Self-Help Housing program through the local Community Action Agency. The Drewrys applied for the program and were selected.

The Results: Amanda's grandmother deeded the couple an acre of land and construction began. They participated in almost every phase of the construction of their new three-bedroom, two-bath, one-car-garage home. With the assistance of their friends, relatives and group participants, the family was able to provide an appreciable amount of sweat-equity. They financed only $32,000 through the Rural Development direct loan program and received a $10,000 grant through the Community Action Agency. Their warm, safe and beautiful ranch-style home turned out to be less expensive than their patched up old trailer. Josh and Amanda provided a major portion of the labor and proclaim the project was worth all the sweat-equity they put into building their dream home. | ![]() Austan Drewry shows off the pictures he drew |
