Success Stories: Senior Citizen is Ready to Retire and Will Be in a Home of Her Own

Outline of Need:

Florence, a single senior citizen, became homeless in June 2002 when a severe wind/rain storm blew through Provo, Utah. She had lived in a mobile home park and shared a trailer with another person. The storm totally destroyed the trailer, blowing the roof off and filling the inside with water. Their furnishings were destroyed as well as many of their personal belongings. Since the storm, Florence has lived in a motel.

Florence works in the building where the Provo Rural Development office is located. After hearing about some of the programs that help people buy homes, she decided to talk to Rural Development staff discuss to the possibilities for herself.

Debbie Cook, the Community Development Manager in Provo, says, "After completing the paperwork we were happy to tell Florence that we would be able to transfer an existing property in the Payson area to her. She will be moving in the end of August and says she is very grateful and doesn't know what she would have done, or where she would have ended up living without our assistance."

The Results:

"Florence is retiring soon and will be living on a fixed income. Therefore, payments will be based on her income that the Government will be subsidizing," Ms. Cook said.

The Provo Rural Development staff states they were happy to be able to assist Florence and they send her their best wishes as she finally gets her own home!
