Human Resources FAQ
Frequently asked questions about employment opportunities:
Can I apply for a vacancy in Rural Development if I haven't worked
for the Federal government before?
We often advertise our vacancies for "all sources". When we do this,
you may apply even if you have never worked for
the Federal government, including military, before. Be sure to follow
the instructions very carefully on the
announcement.
Sometimes however, we only advertise within the internal workforce.
These announcements are also on "usajobs". The
announcement will clearly specify that the job is only open to "current
Federal employees." You would not be eligible
for these openings if you have not worked with the Federal government
on a "status appointment", or do not have
qualifying military service.
Please feel free to contact our HRM if you have any questions regarding
your status.
How do I use "usajobs"?
Because of the different ways the jobs are announced, it is very important
to carefully answer the criteria selections in
"usajobs" One of the best ways to look for a job in a particular agency
is to go the "Agency search". For jobs with
Rural Development, use the drop down menu to locate "Department of
Agriculture". Continue to scroll down until you
reach "Rural Housing Service". Select this one. All job openings in
"Rural Development" will be listed under this section.
Read each criteria section to make sure you are searching for jobs
that fit your interests and qualifications. You also
want to make sure you find jobs for which you are eligible to apply.
Answer each section by highlighting the correct
selection in each category that fits your situation. If you select
the criterion that best fits your personal profile, you
should find any vacancies for which you may qualify in our agency.
What if I want a certain type of job, but there aren't any vacancies
in Rural Development/Tennessee?
Of course, you can use this same technique to look for positions with
any agency government wide. In "usajobs" you
can search under other topics as well. Another common and easy search
is to look under the "Professional" category.
You will find administrative positions under this section including
many entry-level positions. The section entitled "Entry
Level" is being integrated into the professional category, so your
best bet is to "surf" through the Professional section.
