August 6, 2009 - MANCHESTER, Tenn. — U.S. Representative Lincoln Davis, USDA Rural Development Administrator Tammye Trevino and USDA Rural Development Acting State Director Robert Connelly, Jr. today announced an investment of $5,000 to the Greater Van Buren County-Spencer Chamber of Commerce for small business development in Van Buren County. A ceremonial check was delivered to Chamber Director Ann McCormick at Rep. Davis' Sixth Annual Small Business and Federal Grants Seminar held in Manchester on August 5-6.

"I thank USDA Rural Development for partnering with the Greater Van Buren County-Spencer Chamber of Commerce as they look for ways to bring new industry and small businesses to the area," said Congressman Davis. "I am pleased these recovery and reinvestment act dollars are headed to Van Buren County to promote job growth."

The Rural Development grant will fund the purchase of needed computer and other equipment that will be used for business development and recruitment.

"Small business is the economic engine of rural communities, creating jobs and helping maintain a healthy, diversified local economy," said Connelly. "Thanks to the support of Congressman Lincoln Davis, Rural Development has the financial and technical resources to partner with local leaders to improve the lives and livelihoods of the people they serve."

Rural Development’s rural business enterprise grant program provides assistance to local governments and non-profit organizations that assist small businesses, develop local business infrastructure, provide job training, conduct feasibility studies or provide technical assistance to businesses and community leaders.

USDA Rural Development invests in rural communities through business development, community and homeownership programs. Last year Rural Development assisted more than 678,000 Tennessee families and businesses with more than $435 million in financial assistance through affordable loans, loan guarantees and grants.
