Fentress County to get $134,000 for new police cars

September 03, 2009 - JAMESTOWN, Tenn. — Fentress County Mayor John Mullinix  and Rural Development Area Specialist Jerry Jolley announced today an investment of $134,000 to purchase five new police cars to increase the safety and security of Fentress County residents. The announcement took place at the court house.

"I thank Rural Development for investing funds towards equipment that is essential in protecting the residents of Fentress County," said Millinix. "This is another step in our efforts to improve services provided by the county."

The $88,000 Community Facilities Loan will be combined with a $46,000 Community Facilities Grant to purchase the new vehicles and replace older, dilapidated cars in the fleet. The new vehicles will offer an added layer of protection to county residents as well as the officers who operate them.

"Ensuring our first responders have the quality equipment and the tools they need to serve and protect are key to the economic health and quality of life in rural communities," said Jolley. "Thanks to the support of our Congressional Delegation, Rural Development has the financial and technical resources to partner with local leaders to improve the lives and livelihoods of the people they serve."

Rural Development’s community facilities program uses direct loans, loan guarantees and grants to provide rural areas with the financial resources to construct or improve essential services like healthcare, education, civic buildings and first responder facilities. The loan-guarantee program encourages private lenders to expand their investment of capital in rural communities. Community facilities programs target rural areas with a population less than 20,000.

USDA Rural Development’s mission is to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for rural residents. Rural Development fosters growth in homeownership and affordable rental housing, finances business development, and supports the creation of critical community and technology infrastructure. Last year Rural Development assisted more than 678,000 Tennessee families and businesses, investing more than $435 million through affordable loans, loan guarantees and grants.
