Ground Breaking in Amherst for
New Animal Shelter
On September 28,
2007 Nancy Davis, President of the Amherst County Humane Society
along with Ellen M. Davis, State Director for RD and other invited
guests including Baxter a former shelter rescue dog, helped
celebrate the ground breaking for a new animal shelter.
The new shelter will
be 11,200 square feet and includes animal holding room, a puppy
room, separate food prep areas, sales and adoption center and space
for training new pets.
The new facility
will serve two separate entities; the Humane Society of Amherst that
will operate an adoption center and the Amherst County Animal
Shelter that will operate the animal control function.
Rural Development
will be assisting the project by providing a 2.4 million dollar
direct community facility loan.

New Fire and Rescue Station
Coming to Catlett
A groundbreaking was
held on September 5, 2007 for the new fire and rescue building to be
constructed in central Fauquier County. Rural Development will be
assisting the Catlett Volunteer Fire Company with a low interest
loan in the amount of 4.6 million.
Elizabeth (Liz)
Walker, Area Director for Rural Development along with Jim Moore,
President of the Fire Company spoke about the great need the county
has for the new facility and how it will be a great improvement over
the existing fire house.
The new fire and
rescue station will be over 14,000 square feet and will accommodate
5 fire trucks and other rescue equipment. The new station will also
have a social hall for area meetings and have kitchen, showers, and
overnight accommodations for over 12 people.

Assists Town of Wytheville With New Wellness Center
A grand opening
ceremony was held March 22nd in Wytheville Virginia to
open their new Wellness and Conference Center.
Rural Development
assisted the town by making them a low interest loan to finance the
new facility which replaces the town’s old outdated facility. The
new Wellness Center is over 80,000 square feet and consists of a
gym, walking track, 2 multipurpose meeting rooms, fitness areas,
locker rooms, kitchen, office space and a 2000 square foot indoor
swimming pool.
The new center
will serve over 7000 families in the Wytheville area.

Rural Development
Helps the Town of Berryville and Clarke County
The Town of
Berryville and Clarke County are combining their efforts to acquire
new administrative office space by building a new 20,000 square foot
facility.
A Groundbreaking
ceremony was held April 11th in Berryville with Town and
County officials. The new Administration Building will be a 50/50
split between the two jurisdictions and by sharing the cost and
future maintenance of the facility the tax payers will realize a
sizable savings.
Rural Development
will be providing a low interest loan to help finance the new
facility.
Presently, both the Town and the County facilities lack adequate
office space and are not fully handicap accessible. The new facility
will correct these deficiencies along with providing additional
parking on site and a drive through window for easy access by
citizens.

A
New Farmers Market Opens in Highland County
Rural Development
helped celebrate the opening July 13th of the Farmers Market in
Monterey, Virginia.
The new Farmers
Market Pavilion will be a permanent 2128 square foot addition to the
Highland Center and offer local farmers and craftsman an all weather
outlet to sell their products.
The new Farmers
Market Pavilion was financed by a Rural Business-Rural Enterprise
Grant.
Consumers will have
access to locally grown, farm-fresh produce and also have the
pleasure of talking with the farmer that actually grew the product.
The farmers in the
area previously sold their goods in temporary tents setup on the
Highland Center grounds. The new pavilion will be a great
improvement for The Highland Center and its vendors and customers.

Program of All-inclusive Care (PACE)
Mountain Empire Older Citizens, Inc.
(MEOC) has been awarded more that $3.4 million in loan
funds to build the first rural PACE Center in the nation.
PACE is an acronym for Program of All-inclusive Care for the
Elderly, and the new facility will provide a one-stop
health care and social center for elderly residents in Wise, Scott
and Lee counties and the City of Norton.
In addition, the center will bring 41 new jobs to the area and pump
in the local economy approximately $7.8 million annually.

Rural Development helped celebrate National Homeownership Month June
27th by hosting an awards ceremony in Wytheville,
Virginia.
Travis Jackson, Area I Director presented two big checks at the
event, one to Fred Hutchins of Senator Webb’s Staff for $277,881,752
and a second big check to Laura Lee of Congressman Boucher’s Staff
for $66,329,723. These amounts represent the total Single Family
Housing investment made by Rural Development in Virginia and in
Congressional District 9 for the last 18 months.
This assistance has allowed over 2296 families to have a safe and
decent place to live.
In addition to the big checks, James Reid, Director of Single Family
Housing Programs, presented the Homeowner of the Year Award to the
Lavin Family. The Lavin Family has overcome many obstacles and
personal challenges to become homeowners for the very first time.
They will be moving into their new home in the Wytheville area in
just a few weeks. |
