Housing Preservation
Grants

Gracie Allen, a Skokomish Indian Tribe senior, realized her need for
home repairs after a visiting family member fell through the floor.
Unfortunately, neither she nor the tribe had adequate funds to cover the
cost of the repairs.
The
tribe applied for and received a USDA Rural Development Housing
Preservation Grant (HPG) for $34,800 in December 2004 to help 22
low-income tribal members. Priority was given to the elderly with the
most immediate need for home repairs.
The
Skokomish Tribe received an earlier Housing Preservation Grant of
$38,483 in January 2004, which was leveraged with $65,000 from Housing
and Urban Development under the Native American Housing Assistance and
Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA). The earlier grant was also the
first HPG awarded to a Native American tribe in Washington State.
Through both grants, 46 low-income families were able to make crucial
repairs to their homes.
“This
goes a long way providing repairs to our members who need it most,” said
Steve Dunk, Community Development Housing Planner for the Skokomish
Tribe. “This has made a huge, positive impact on our community.”
